The Kitchener-Waterloo region will be receiving GO train service by 2024, in conjunction with the new transit hub that is due to be built in Kitchener.
Metrolinx struck a deal with the company Canadian National Railway (CN) that will move freight traffic from the rails between Georgetown and Bramalea, previously an issue in providing service to this area. Metrolinx owns the track from Union station to Bramalea station in Brampton, but CN was responsible for the track from there to Georgetown. Now, Metrolinx can connect two important economic hubs between Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto with the new plan in place.
The agreement also includes planning a new freight corridor for CN, though specific details were not released as of yet concerning where the new rail will be built. It is expected that park lands along Highway 407 and 401 will be used to make way for GO service in the other corridor.
The GO service between the two areas will now have two-way all day service. There will be two new peak hour trips in the morning and afternoon for transit users and will serve Kitchener, Guelph and Acton among other surrounding areas. A new express bus service will also be offered that will connect commuters with the Bramlea GO station from Kitchener to Union station to provide more service options.
Premier Kathleen Wynne made the announcement today along with Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca that the province would also fund $43 million for a new transit hub in Kitchener to further support building a “supercorridor” of innovation between two important cities in the province. The Region of Waterloo announced plans for the transit hub to include transpiration on the ION LRT project, Grand River Transit (the bus service), VIA Rail, Greyhound, and the GO corridor.
“Expanding GO Transit between Kitchener-Waterloo and the GTA will reduce commute times and make a real difference in people’s daily lives,” Wynne said. “Most exciting is that the agreement we have reached with CN brings us another step closer to building the innovation supercorridor by connecting Waterloo Region and Toronto with two-way, all-day electric GO trains.”
