Metrolinx and the Toronto Transit Commission have partnered to offer riders a discount of up to $1.50 when they transfer between lines using their PRESTO card. The announcement was made during the opening of the 66th GO Transit Station at Downsview Park, linking to the new TTC extension to York Region.
According to a press release, this means a total savings of $720 a year for the regular commuter who transfers between GO Transit and the TTC. The cost to subsidize the discount is about $18 million a year for the province.
Over 50,000 daily trips include transfers between these three transportation lines — GO, UP Express, and the TTC. The new co-fare system will offer 50 per cent discounts to those transferring between any of these lines with a PRESTO card. Those who use the PRESTO monthly pass will not be given the discount.
“For commuters to choose public transit, we know it needs to be the fast, easy, affordable option no matter where you’re going,” said Ontario Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca, in a statement. “We’ve made fares more affordable for commuters who use PRESTO to transfer between the TTC and GO Transit or the UP Express. The new GO station at Downsview Park makes it easier and more convenient for riders to transfer seamlessly between GO and the TTC.”
The co-fare system began January 2018.
